Climate change is one of the biggest threats to our planet and civilization, so why does it receive so little news attention? As an Optimist subscriber, you are invested in knowing about climate news, but despite being on the radar for over 30 years, climate change has been put on the back burner by major media outlets who deem it too depressing or are silenced by money from big oil.
Fortunately, Columbia Journalism Review and The Nation have launched a “Covering Climate Now” project which aims to bridge the gap between the media and critical climate news. This project has helped media outlets navigate covering the broad topic of climate change in an effective and informative way. While many media outlets are pulling their weight with climate news, many more worry the stories are too depressing, politically biased, or too big for media coverage to make an impact.
