It can be extremely difficult for law enforcement to ensure the protection of large swaths of the forest from loggers. In a new, unique approach to protecting trees, developers are creating code that could be added to heavy machinery in order to prevent deforestation in areas that struggle with enforcement.

AKQA Brazil, the creative firm behind the code, believes that while it may be hard to “stop humans from destroying our planet, we can stop the machines they use.”

In order for the code to actually do its work, heavy equipment manufacturers would have to begin adding it to their new machinery. That’s why the creative firm is trying to work with nonprofits to convince national governments with vulnerable landscapes to require loggers to use the code by law.
