  • ChatGPT had 700 million users per week in July 2025
  • The gender gap has disappeared – from 80 percent male users to 48 percent in June 2025
  • Non-work-related messages increased from 53 percent to 73 percent between June 2024 and June 2025

Rapid global growth

A new study from OpenAI shows that ChatGPT is growing rapidly and being used in different ways globally.

ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and by July 2025 had 18 billion messages being sent each week by 700 million users. For a new technology, this speed of global diffusion has no precedent.

The study shows that the gender gap in ChatGPT usage has decreased dramatically over time. In the first few months after ChatGPT was released, about 80 percent of active users had typically masculine first names, but this number declined to 48 percent in June 2025, with active users now more likely to have typically feminine names.

Geographic distribution

ChatGPT usage has grown relatively faster in low- and middle-income countries over the past year. The study examined global patterns by measuring the proportion of weekly active ChatGPT users among the internet-enabled population in countries with populations larger than one million.

Usage patterns

Non-work-related messages are growing faster than work-related ones and now represent 73 percent of all consumer ChatGPT messages, an increase from 53 percent in June 2024. The decrease in the share of work-related messages is primarily due to changing usage within each cohort of users.

The three most common conversation topics are practical guidance, seeking information, and writing, which together account for about 77 percent of all ChatGPT conversations. Practical guidance is the most common use case and includes activities like tutoring and teaching, advice on various topics, and creative ideation.

Age distribution

Nearly half of all messages sent by adults come from users under 26 years old, although age gaps have narrowed somewhat in recent months. A higher share of messages are work-related for older users.

Education and occupation

Educated users and users in highly-paid professional occupations are significantly more likely to use ChatGPT for work. 37 percent of messages are work-related for users with less than a bachelor's degree, compared to 46 percent for users with exactly a bachelor's degree and 48 percent for those with some graduate education.

Writing dominates work-related tasks and accounts for 40 percent of work-related messages on average in June 2025. About two-thirds of all writing messages ask ChatGPT to modify user text rather than create new text from scratch.

Quality and satisfaction

Good interactions were about three times as common as bad interactions at the end of 2024, but good interactions grew much more rapidly over the following nine months, and by July 2025 they were more than four times more common.

The study is based on automated classification of a representative sample of ChatGPT conversations with strict privacy protections, where no human observers saw user messages.
