Our whole world is dominated by plastic and we use it for everything. However, more and more companies are coming up with ideas to deal with this issue and create innovative solutions in order to save our home from plastic pollution. One of these companies is The Great Wrap.

The Great Wrap is a company founded in Australia by Jordy and Julia Key. They create environmentally friendly plastic wrap. While some other companies doing similar projects tell the consumers that their plastic wrap is biodegradable, the labeling is often misleading. Even if the product can break down in nature, it’s not guaranteed that it’s beneficial or not even neutral to nature. The Great Wrap’s product is different - it is actually biodegradable and you can throw it in the same bin as your food scraps. The decomposed “plastic wrap” gives the solid nutrients rather than destroying it.

So how do they do this? Well, the company is using byproducts from the potato chips industry. Many potatoes and all the skin gets thrown away due to imperfections. From this natural waste they create a biopolymer plastic-like material. Then they can roll the product onto rolls and sell it - giving it new life. The rolls they use are made from recycled plastic bottles which creates a hard shell that protects the plastic wrap and effectively cuts the material.

The backside of this product is that it can’t be heated in the microwave on high or medium heat without the risk of the product melting. It can however be put safely in the fridge for up to two years without it decomposing or breaking down.

Companies like The Great Wrap sets a very good example of innovative ideas that can help a greener and brighter future come sooner.
