New York Public Libraries (NYPL) are giving away 500 000 books this summer in order to keep kids engaged in reading. Their idea is that the kids are to keep them forever: β€œa lifelong love of readingβ€”and your own home libraryβ€”begin with choosing your first book.”

The kids can choose from a bunch of authors and the books have characters who mirror the rich multicultural diversity of the city. Different locations will offer books in other languages besides English like for example Spanish and Chinese. The libraries also offer books with large print titles. All of the books are chosen by NYPL’s librarian experts and they are all from recommended reading lists.

Besides this book giveaway, the libraries are hosting free events and programs for all ages. Kids can still borrow books, DVDs and music and now, without late fines.
