In southern Niger, farmers have nurtured the natural regrowth of some 200 million trees on formerly treeless fields, according to geographer Chris Reij. This has boosted crop yields. Crops such as millet and sorghum have shallow roots and transpire less moisture than the deeper-rooted grasses they replace, leaving more water in the soil.

The Great Green Wall project has evolved from a planned barrier of trees into grassroots efforts to capture rainfall. Farmers place stones along hill contours, dig small holes known as zai pits amid crops, and form crescent-shaped mounds around trees. The techniques improve soil moisture and help water infiltrate underground.

Nigeria is now looking to restore the 165,000-acre South Chad Irrigation Project on the shores of Lake Chad. The project was abandoned for want of water.

Wildlife is recovering

In Chad's Ouadi RimΓ©-Ouadi Achim nature reserve, the wadis have regained their water. Conservationists are documenting resurgent numbers of aardvarks, porcupines, badgers, and foxes. The scimitar-horned oryx, once declared extinct in the wild, has been reintroduced and now numbers more than 600 individuals. West African giraffes are browsing in areas from which they had disappeared.
