🦾 What can we learn from the Swedish IT miracle for the AI era?

Last Friday, we had the first formal meeting with the AI Commission. There, we announced the news that we are adding an expert group of heavyweights:

BΓΆrje Ekholm, CEO of Ericsson, Martin Lundstedt, CEO of AB Volvo, Mats Granryd, Chairman of the Board at Vattenfall, Katarina Areskoug, former head of the EU Commission in Sweden, Magnus Tyreman, former Europe head at McKinsey, Katrin Westling Palm, Director-General of the Swedish Tax Agency, and Nils Γ–berg, Director-General of the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.

Newspaper Dagens Industri was there and reported on this addition, and also took some pictures. As you can see, I have a prominent role in the commission...

BΓΆrje Ekholm's Ericsson hosted the meeting, and we were given presentations about their AI work as well as the status in the expansion of 5G. ABB and Vattenfall also gave presentations.

I have been thinking a lot about what made Sweden so successful as an IT nation in the 1990s. This is relevant not only for Sweden, but for every country entering the AI age.

Newsweek named Stockholm the internet capital of Europe. Swedes had the most computers and the best broadband in the world. From the Swedish IT miracle, Skype, Spotify, and many other billion-dollar companies were born. What can we learn from that?

Therefore, I have talked to some who were there when it happened. That is the topic for this week's article: 🦾 What can we learn from the Swedish IT miracle for the AI era?

Usually, when writing an opinion piece, it carries a thesis or a message. Not this one. It ends with an open question. That question is based on the notion that something big is underway. Something revolutionary.
